Rodent advice usually splits into two versions: warm places where nothing changes and cold places with one dramatic autumn migration. They arrive along a limb or a utility line, work the roof edge, and slip in at a soffit gap, a gable vent with tired screen, or a plumbing boot cracked by sun. Once in, insulation makes nesting material and the top plates make highways. The crawl space belongs to Norway rats and mice. The way in is usually a vent screen rusted through in a humid climate, an access door that no longer seats, skirting pulled loose from a pier, or the oversized hole where plumbing passes through the subfloor. Underneath they get dry cover, subfloor insulation, and a direct path up into wall cavities. Because both routes lead to the same living space, sealing one and not the other rarely holds. Trap placement that actually catches

A crawl space under an addition may not be connected to the original one, so it gets its own vents and its own access, and often its own neglected screening. Rooflines that tie into an existing wall create a valley and a flashing detail that can open up over time. Utility runs are the other issue. Every addition brings new plumbing, wiring and duct through walls that were once exterior, and those penetrations were cut generously and rarely closed tight afterward. None of this means an addition is a problem, only that it doubles the number of transitions where an opening can hide. What the first month should look like
